The Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment (HIE), Western Sydney University, is offering two PhD research scholarships to work on the following projects:

  1. Maximising disease suppression: scaling up biocontrol strategies for bacterial pathogens
  2. Unveiling infection biomarkers in pre-symptomatic plants: early pathogen detection.

Applications close 31 August 2023.

These projects contribute towards improving production of vegetable crops and trialing technologies for early detection of common bacterial diseases. Both projects are co-funded by Horticulture Innovation Australia, the Department of Primary Industries NSW, and Western Sydney University.

What the scholarships include:

  • Tax-free stipends of $31,500(AUD) per annum for up to 3 years to support living costs for international and domestic candidates.
  • International candidates with a strong track record may be eligible for a tuition fee waiver.
  • Covering an Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) insurance policies for international candidates for the duration of their study in Australia.
  • Support for conference attendance, fieldwork and additional costs as approved by the Institute.
